Switchboard Electrician to Test Engineer – Auckland

Auckland West
Job Reference:
Ref # 355

About our client
Our client is a respected Auckland switchboard manufacturer known for high-quality, custom-engineered switchboards and motor control centres (MCCs). Their boards go into some of New Zealand's most significant commercial, industrial and infrastructure projects, where quality and reliability are not negotiable. With a strong forward workload they're looking for a registered electrician experienced in switchboard building ready to take the next step in their career development.

The opportunity
This is a genuine progression role. You'll start out using your switchboard experience on the build side. Alongside that, you'll work directly with the company's experienced Test Engineer, who will train and mentor you. The aim is for you to step into the Test Engineer position yourself.
It suits someone who already builds a tidy board and now wants to be the one who signs it off.

What you'll do

  • Build and wire LV switchboards, distribution boards and MCCs to drawings and specifications
  • Learn the full testing and inspection process alongside the current Test Engineer
  • Carry out point-to-point, insulation resistance, continuity and functional testing
  • Test PLC, automation and control circuits, VSDs, soft starters and metering
  • Complete test records, QA documentation and final sign-off
  • Work with the engineering and drafting team to resolve issues before boards leave the workshop
  • Gradually take ownership of testing as your skills and confidence grow

What you'll bring

  • NZ registered Electrician or Electrical Engineer with a current EWRB practising licence
  • Hands-on switchboard or panel building experience, ideally industrial boards and MCCs
  • Confidence reading electrical schematics and GA drawings
  • Some testing experience is a plus, but the drive to learn matters more
  • A methodical, accurate approach and a high standard of workmanship
  • Ambition to grow beyond the tools into a technical, quality-focused role
  • A current NZ driver's licence and the right to work in New Zealand

What's on offer

  • A clear career path from switchboard electrician to Test Engineer
  • One-on-one training and mentoring from an experienced Test Engineer
  • Competitive pay that grows with your skills and responsibility
  • Premium builds for high-profile projects, work you'll be proud to sign off
  • A modern, well-equipped workshop
  • A stable, long-term role with a strong pipeline of work
  • A supportive team that values quality and invests in its people
